The Difficult Journey

I was amazed when I learned of the success of Oregon resident Colin O’Brady as he completed the 54-day solo journey across Antarctica! He is the first person ever to complete the trek unaided by anyone, including a kite. Everyday he packed up and pulled 375 pounds uphill by sled, regardless of the weather that day. His story is an inspiration to us all.

O’Brady’s journey compares to the journey all of us face. He experienced many of the high and lows of the trek that I believe we also feel in life. He recounts of times he was excited and motivated to keep going and other times in which we was ready to quit or take a break, even if only for a day. Due to his limited supplies, he packed in such a way that there was no day to stop. He forced himself to press on in the face of storms. He shares about days in which he was so distraught that tears were pouring down his checks, into his goggles, and freezing onto his face. I cannot say I have had that experience by any means, but I can remember multiple journeys in which I wanted to take a break or quit all together.

On days O’Brady wanted to stop, he was able to muster up determination and passion as he remembered all those cheering for him. On those days he would breath deeply, refocus, and take one step at a time. He continued to stay in touch with loved ones and share his progress on social media. Having the comfort and encouragement of others was a huge motivator in his forward steps.

At the end of his journey, O’Brady told Fox News, “I’m no longer the same person I was when I left on the journey.” The journey changed him, for the better. I want to encourage you to read more about Colin O’Brady. His journey inspires us to move forward no matter what the difficulty.
